The missing links between galaxies have finally been found. This is the first detection of the roughly half of the normal matter in our universe – protons, neutrons and electrons – unaccounted for by previous observations of stars, galaxies and other bright objects in space.
Why you can’t extrapolate back to a singularity.
One of the most impressive aspects of astronomy is the stunning visuals. These amazing color images inspire our love of the cosmos, and are a perennial hit on social media. They also aren’t real, at least in the sense of being an accurate representation of how celestial objects actually appear to the human eye. They are more art than science, providing an illusion of reality.
The price for getting there has dropped sharply, and even a total project price tag of as little as $35 billion is downright cheap
And the method teaches us just how far Pluto is from actual planethood.
Aladin is an interactive sky atlas allowing the user to visualize digitized astronomical images or full surveys, superimpose entries from astronomical catalogues or databases, and interactively access related data and information from the Simbad database, the VizieR service and other archives for all known astronomical objects in the field.
Though the undertaking will no doubt include many challenges, NASA is finally ready to make humanity's dream of sending people to Mars a reality. To that end, the agency has shared its five-part plan for reaching the Red Planet.
The red planet once wasn’t so different from Earth. Here’s what happened.
20 years before Sally Ride, Valentina Tereshkova set the bar. She’s still amazing after more than 50 years.
In general, astronomy is reactive—we spot something unusual by chance and point as many telescopes as we can manage to try to figure out what's going on. It's rare that we have something pointing in the right direction to catch an event right as it starts.
New findings from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) provide the strongest evidence yet that liquid water flows intermittently on present-day Mars.
Wanderers is a vision of humanity's expansion into the Solar System, based on scientific ideas and concepts of what our future in space might look like, if it ever happens. The locations depicted in the film are digital recreations of actual places in the Solar System, built from real photos and map data where available.
And if you’re amazed by this, just imagine what the next generation of space-and-ground-based telescopes will see!
With a small side project, astronomers discover a new type of galaxy.
Preliminary analysis suggests that the lander began the manoeuvre flawlessly, braking against the planet’s atmosphere and deploying its parachute. But at 4 minutes and 41 seconds into an almost 6-minute fall, something went wrong. The lander’s heat shield and parachute ejected ahead of time, says Vago. Then thrusters, designed to decelerate the craft for 30 seconds until it was metres off the ground, engaged for only around 3 seconds before they were commanded to switch off, because the lander's computer thought it was on the ground.
Yesterday, word came that even the 100-200 billion figure would have to be revised. Christopher Conselice, an astrophysicist at the University of Nottingham, in the United Kingdom, and a team of international colleagues, found that, after poring through deep space images from Hubble and other telescopes, and converting them into a three-dimensional model, there had to be at least ten times more galaxies than thought—so, at least a trillion. This figure, he and his colleagues write in their paper, “divulges information about the mass density of the universe, background light at various wavelengths, as well as insights into Olbers’ Paradox.”
Astronauts making a years-long voyage to Mars may get bombarded with enough cosmic radiation to seriously damage their brains, researchers reported Monday.
Voici à quoi ressemblerait Mars si on y mettait de l'eau.
A special instalment of TED Ed's educational series.
It’s small, it’s hot, and it’s shrinking. New NASA-funded research suggests that Mercury is contracting even today, joining Earth as a tectonically active planet.

Because “Earth-like” doesn’t necessarily mean “like our Earth.”
But it’s the combination of those three factors — the Sun’s outbursts, the Earth’s magnetic field and our atmospheric composition — that lead to the spectacular auroral shows that delight skywatchers from both above and below so thoroughly. Only on Earth does this incredible combination occur, and there’s no other world we know of that has shows quite like our own. For the first time, in the highest-resolutions ever, we can now all enjoy the show for ourselves.
Each of these factors combine to make any satellite fundamentally unstable. Given enough time and the lack of other, stabilizing effects, absolutely everything will decay. It’s only that in low-Earth orbit, the atmospheric drag is such a large effect that the decays happen on timescales of less than a human lifespan! All the orbits are unstable after all, but some are more unstable than others.
When you put it all together, it means the most astounding fact about the Universe is this: that it exists in such a way that it can be understood at all.
Japan’s flagship astronomical satellite Hitomi, which launched successfully on 17 February but tumbled out of control five weeks later, may have been doomed by a basic engineering error. Confused about how it was oriented in space and trying to stop itself from spinning, Hitomi's control system apparently commanded a thruster jet to fire in the wrong direction — accelerating, rather than slowing, the craft's rotation.
If we started all over again, could our Solar System’s second planet have been the inhabited one?
So the punch line is that Proxima b can retain liquid water on its surface for a wide range of conditions—but only if it held on to some water while its star went through its youthful tantrums. Another potential obstacle to habitability is the amount of energetic radiation Proxima b receives compared to Earth: 250 times more X-rays and 30 times more extreme ultraviolet light. What this means for the planet’s atmosphere is unclear, but it’s probably not a deal-breaker for life.
This is the planet we have been waiting for.

In August and September of 1977 the twin spacecraft Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 were launched. Their mission was to explore our solar system “from Jupiter to Neptune” before eventually leaving it—heading into interstellar space and to the truly unexplored beyond. Fixed to each spacecraft was a gold-coated record containing information about life on Earth—like a message in a bottle for any intelligent life that might discover it.
